Domains through Magic Pages are in beta. To get access, email [help@magicpages.co](mailto:help@magicpages.co) and we'll turn them on for your account.

Turn off **Renew automatically** on the domain's page. Nothing is charged after that, and the domain expires on its renewal date instead of renewing. You can turn it back on any time before then.

## Turning off auto-renew

1. In the portal, open the **Domain** tab.
2. Under **Registered with Magic Pages**, click the domain.
3. In the **Renewal** section, switch off **Renew automatically**.
4. The portal asks **Turn off automatic renewal?** and shows the date the domain expires. Click **Turn off renewal** to confirm, or **Cancel** to leave it as it was.

The **Renewal** section then shows "Expires on" and that date. Until then, your site and everything else on the domain keep working as normal.

Turning it back on is the same switch, and it needs no confirmation.

## What happens when it expires

After the expiry date, your site stops loading at the domain, and it goes back to its free `.mymagic.page` address. The registry releases the domain, which means someone else could register it. We email you when that happens.

If you'd rather keep the domain but take it elsewhere, you don't need to let it expire first. You can move it to another registrar at any time, for free:

## How renewal works when it's on

We charge each year on the renewal date you see in the portal, to the card you paid with, and we renew the domain at the registry once that payment has gone through. The price is the registry's price at that time, worked out the same way as when you bought it, plus VAT. Stripe, who process our domain payments, issues the invoice.

Before that:

- 21 days before, we check the card. If it expires before the renewal, we email you so you can update it in time.
- 14 days before, we email you the renewal price, and the domain's status in the portal changes to **Renewal due**.
- On the renewal date, we charge the renewal and renew the domain.

While you're moving the domain to another registrar, we hold the renewal charge. If you cancel the move, the renewal goes ahead.

To get a reminder in your own calendar, click **Add renewal to calendar** under **Your records** on the domain's page.

## Changing the card

Open the **Billing** tab, find the domain under **Domains** and click **Update payment method**. When a renewal is due or has failed, the same button also appears on the domain's own page. A secure Stripe page opens in a new tab, where you enter the new card. It's used for all your domains from then on, including a renewal that's still waiting to be paid.

Your domains are billed separately from your hosting plan, so changing the card for one doesn't change it for the other. The Domains section on the Billing tab is also where you find each domain's invoices, under **Show invoices**.

## If a renewal payment fails

The domain's status changes to **Payment failed**, and its page tells you when the domain goes offline. Update your payment method straight away. We try the renewal again on the new card, and once it's paid, the domain renews.

If the renewal date passes without a successful payment, the domain goes offline, and within a day its status changes to **Offline**. Your site and any email addresses on it can't be reached. We email you with the exact deadline for getting it back. How that works depends on the extension:

- Most generic extensions, like `.com`, `.net` or `.org`, can still be renewed at the normal price for a while after that. Update your payment method before the deadline, and once the renewal is paid, the domain comes back online automatically.
- Many country extensions have no such window. Once they've gone offline, they can only be restored, and the registry charges a restore fee for that. The email tells you the fee. Update your payment method, and once the renewal is paid, our team restores the domain and charges the restore fee to the same card as a separate invoice.

If we still can't charge the renewal once Stripe's payment retries have run out, or the deadline in the email passes, the domain expires and is released, the same way as a domain with auto-renew turned off.
