Finland
Every day, a copy of your site goes to separate storage at Hetzner's data center in Finland. A backup sitting next to your site isn't much of a backup, so ours sit in another country.

Your newsletters
The EU
Your newsletters go out through Mailgun's European region. Subscriber addresses and delivery data are processed and stored in Europe. Sending is included in your plan.

Copies of your public pages
Near your readers
A reader in Sydney gets your page from a Cloudflare location near them, instead of waiting for Germany. Only public pages are copied. Member-only posts, Ghost admin and every form always go back to Germany.
Under the hood: Cloudflare CDN, DNS, firewall (WAF) and DDoS protection. Cloudflare is a US company; more on that below.
What this means for you
The questions publishers ask us about servers, without needing to know what a server is.
Is my site GDPR-friendly?
Yes. Everything we store for you stays in the EU. Our data processing agreement is public, and we co-sign it when you ask. We work with three sub-processors, and we email you before adding or replacing one.

Will it be fast far from Europe?
Yes. Your public pages are copied to Cloudflare locations around the world, so readers in New York or Tokyo don't wait for a round trip to Germany.

What if a server breaks?
Nothing you've saved lives on just one machine. Your images and files are kept three times, on separate servers, and your database is copied as well. If the server running your site fails, your site starts again on another one.

What if I delete something by accident?
We back up your site every day and keep restore points for three months. You can download any of them yourself from the customer portal, or take a fresh one before a big change. How backups work

Who else sees my readers?
As few as possible. Ghost's sign-up, search and comment scripts load from your own domain, not a public CDN. Ghost's web analytics and the Social Web run on our own servers. The one outside call is Stripe, if you sell paid memberships. What loads from where

Who notices when something's wrong?
We do, usually before you. Every server is monitored, and alerts go straight to our phones. Pro plans billed monthly or yearly come with a 99.9% uptime guarantee. Live status is at status.magicpages.co.

Cloudflare is a US company
We looked for a European network that could protect sites from attacks at a price we could keep for you. We didn't find one. So your traffic passes through Cloudflare, while the data itself stays in Germany.

Outages still happen
Servers fail, networks drop, and sometimes we get things wrong. When that happens, we publish what happened, how many sites it touched, and what we changed so it doesn't happen the same way again.

Running on renewable power
The parts we choose, the servers and the network in front of them, run on renewable electricity. The rest of the internet, from routers to your readers' phones, is the same for every website. Rather than invent a number for that, we'll stick to what we can check.
Servers: Hetzner
Hetzner buys all of the electricity for its German data centers from renewable sources. The buildings are efficient too: for every 100 watts the servers use, only about 13 more go to cooling and everything else.

Cloudflare says its global network is powered by renewable energy. Because your pages are served from nearby copies, fewer requests travel all the way to Germany.

How a visit reaches your site

- Every site runs in its own Docker container on dedicated servers at Hetzner. Updates start the new version before stopping the old one, so your site stays up.

- Every site has its own MySQL database and credentials. The database is replicated, and if the main database server fails, another one takes over automatically.
- Files
- Ceph keeps every file three times on separate servers and repairs itself when a disk fails.
- Network
- Our servers talk to each other over private networks, not the public internet, with an encrypted backup route if one fails.
- Backups
- Daily, stored in Finland, kept for up to three months. Can also be sent to your own storage.
- Ghost updates
- Automatic, in small batches, rolled back if a site doesn't come up.
- Social Web and analytics
- Self-hosted by us. No third-party analytics.
- Security
- Your site is only reachable through Cloudflare's firewall, never directly. Only our team can access the servers, and only with two-factor sign-in.
