Where are the Magic Pages servers located?

Everything we store for you stays inside the EU. Your site runs on our own hardware in Germany, your backups are kept in Finland, and your newsletters go out through Mailgun's EU region.

The one part that isn't in a single place is the CDN, and that's the piece worth understanding properly.

Where your site runs

On servers we rent from Hetzner, in two of their data centre parks in Germany:

• Hetzner Data Center Park Nuremberg
• Hetzner Data Center Park Falkenstein

Your database, your uploaded images and files, and Ghost itself all run there. Hetzner is a German company, so the operator sits inside the EU as well as the hardware.

Where your backups are kept

In Finland, at a different Hetzner site, on a machine we run ourselves.

The separation is the point. A backup sitting next to the server it's backing up isn't much of a backup, so we keep it in another country on unrelated hardware. It's still the EU, and still the same legal footing as everything else.

Where your pages are served from

Through Cloudflare's network. When a reader in Sydney opens your site, they get a cached copy of the page from a Cloudflare location near them, instead of waiting for a round trip to Germany.

This is the part that trips people up. A cached page is a temporary copy of something any visitor could already load. It isn't a second home for your data. The record of your site stays in Germany.

Anything that isn't public skips the cache entirely. Member-only pages, the Ghost admin area and every form submission go back to the German servers on each request. That traffic does pass through Cloudflare on the way, because that's how a CDN works, but no copy of it is kept at the edge.

Cloudflare is a US company running a global network. Its processing is governed by Cloudflare's own data processing addendum, linked from our sub-processor list.

Where your newsletters are processed

Through Mailgun, on their EU region. Subscriber addresses, send logs and delivery data are processed and stored in Europe. Sending is included with your plan, so you don't need your own Mailgun account.

If you're on a custom setup that sends through a Mailgun account of your own, the region is whichever one you picked when you created it.

The paperwork

Our data processing agreement is public, so you can read it before you ask anyone for it. If you need it signed, email help@magicpages.co and we'll co-sign it digitally.

Our sub-processor list is public too. Three at the moment: Hetzner for hosting, Cloudflare for the CDN and DNS, Mailgun for email. We email you before adding or replacing any of them.

That list covers what we run. It doesn't cover what you add inside Ghost yourself, so if you connect Stripe, embed an analytics script or drop in a third-party widget, those are yours to account for.
