Pausing, moving or fixing Discourse sign-in

Turn forum sign-in off for a while, move to a new forum address, or fix a forum the Discourse tab says needs attention.

Everything here happens on the Discourse tab in your Customer portal: pausing sign-in, moving the forum, and fixing it when the tab says it needs attention.

Pausing sign-in

The Members can sign in to the forum switch on the Discourse tab turns sign-in off and on. Turning it off asks you to confirm. Forum accounts, posts and groups stay in Discourse, and everything you've set up stays in your portal.

Pausing only stops sign-ins. For everyone already on the forum, we keep updating groups, names and emails, and keep applying your choice for deleted members.

While it's off, members who click Log in on the forum see "Forum sign-in is turned off for this site." Members who aren't signed in to your site see it after entering their email and code.

To let them sign in with Discourse's own accounts instead, also turn off enable discourse connect in Discourse. Members who only ever signed in through your site have no forum password, so they'd need to reset it there.

Turning it back on needs no confirmation.

Moving to a new forum address

Click Edit settings, change Forum address, and test the connection again. A new address turns sign-in off, because a different address can be a different forum. Turn it back on once the test passes.

For us, a new address is a new forum: tier groups are created again there, and members join them as they sign in. Your old forum isn't touched, and that includes deleted members. From then on, we only act on accounts on the new forum.

If your site's address changes instead, update discourse connect url in Discourse to the new value from your portal. We check your forum's settings once a day and will flag it if you don't.

When the forum needs attention

A Needs attention badge means a connection test failed, something we tried on your forum didn't work, or we held back on deleting forum accounts. The heading of the note under the badge says which, and the note says what to do.

While the badge is there, we don't update groups, names or emails, and we don't act on deleted members. Edit settings stays available the whole time, so you can change any setting, the forum address included.

The API key

Discourse rejected the key, or it's missing a scope. Members can still sign in.

If the key was revoked or changed, create a new one with the user level "All users" and every scope listed in Connecting your Discourse forum. Click Update API key, paste it in, and click Test connection. If only a scope is missing, you can tick it on the existing key in Discourse instead, then test again.

A forum setting

enable discourse connect is off, or a setting like discourse connect url doesn't match. A connection test or our daily check found it. Members may not be able to sign in until it's fixed.

Change the setting in Discourse to the value the message gives you. Then click Edit settings and Test connection.

Many forum members missing at once

We held back on deleting forum accounts because a lot of members went missing from your site at once. Members can still sign in, but updates are paused, and a connection test won't clear this one.

Email help@magicpages.co and tell us whether you meant to delete those members. We wrote about why we hold back.

Once it's fixed

For the API key and forum settings, the badge goes away when the test passes. We then catch up on everything that changed in the meantime. On a big forum that can take a while.

Things that look wrong but aren't

  • "Your forum is limiting requests." Discourse allows a limited number of admin requests a minute, shared with anything else that uses your forum's API. We wait and pick up where we left off, so on a big forum every change takes longer to arrive.
  • Your forum is offline for a while. We try again on the next check, and nothing needs fixing on your side.
  • A member's groups haven't changed yet. Changes arrive within a few minutes, or straight away when they sign in again.

If you're still stuck, email help@magicpages.co with your forum address and the message the Discourse tab shows.
