How to move your domain to another registrar

Move a domain registered with Magic Pages to any other registrar, for free and without asking us: download your records, get the code, switch.

Domains through Magic Pages are in beta. To get access, email help@magicpages.co and we'll turn them on for your account.

You can move a domain registered with Magic Pages to any other registrar, whenever you like. It's free, you don't need to ask us, and your site and email keep working until you change nameservers at your new provider.

That also works when a renewal payment has failed or the domain has gone offline.

Before you start

  • Generic extensions like .com can't change registrar within 60 days of being registered or of their last move. That's an ICANN rule. If it applies, your new registrar turns the transfer down.
  • Make sure the domain's email address is one you read. Your new registrar may send a confirmation there.
  • Moving a .uk domain works with your new registrar's IPS tag instead of a code:

A .uk domain moves by its IPS tag, not a transfer code. How to move one to Magic Pages with REGISTRAR-EU, and how to move one away again.

Moving your domain, step by step

  1. In the portal, open the Domain tab. Under Registered with Magic Pages, click the domain.
  2. In Move this domain elsewhere, click Download your DNS records. You get the domain passport, a zip with a complete copy of the records. If you already have your records, or the download button isn't there, tick I already have my DNS records instead.
  3. Click Prepare transfer, check the name in the confirmation, and click Show transfer code. That unlocks the domain and shows its transfer code.
  4. Copy the code and start the transfer at your new registrar.

The code is only shown during that visit. We don't store it or email it. If your new registrar rejects it, click Generate new code while you're still on the page. If you've left the page, click Cancel transfer and start again from Prepare transfer.

While the move runs, the domain's page says "Moving out", and we hold any renewal charge. We approve your new registrar's request on our side, usually within ten minutes of it arriving. If that doesn't happen, the registry completes the move after five days.

Your site and email during the move

Nothing changes until the domain has moved, and even then, its DNS keeps running on our nameservers. Your site and email keep working until you point the domain at your new provider's nameservers.

So set up the records at your new provider first, using the records from step 2, then switch the nameservers. If your site should stay with Magic Pages, keep the website records as they were:

Changed your mind?

Click Cancel transfer on the domain's page. We lock the domain again and turn down a request that's waiting. That's possible until the move has gone through, except for .uk domains, where Nominet moves the domain as soon as we set the tag.

Once it has moved

We cancel the domain's subscription with us, so there are no further charges from Magic Pages. The year you've already paid for isn't refunded, but it moves with the domain, and your new registrar may add a year on top. We email you when the move is complete.
